Peruvian Hair 101: How to Wash, Store, and Extend the Life of Your Wig

Great hair doesn't stop at the checkout. How you wash it, store it, and handle the little details — like the knots along your lace — decides whether your unit still looks salon-fresh six months from now, or starts thinning and matting after a few wears. Here's what actually matters.

Know what you're working with

Peruvian hair is the texture we work in most, and it's worth understanding why. It's naturally straight to slightly wavy, a touch coarser than Brazilian hair strand-for-strand, but noticeably lighter on the head. That combination is what lets a Peruvian unit hold a curl for days without going limp, while still feeling breathable in Dar es Salaam heat.

Wash on a schedule, not a whim

Wearing your unit daily? Wash it roughly every 7–10 wears, about once every one to two weeks. Wearing it a couple of times a week instead? Stretch that to every 4–6 weeks. Always use a sulfate-free shampoo — regular shampoo strips the cuticle and shortens the life of even the best Grade 7A hair. Detangle first with a wide-tooth comb, wash in lukewarm (never hot) water, and let it air-dry flat on a towel instead of wringing or twisting it.

Bleached knots aren't optional on HD lace

Every strand on a lace unit is hand-tied into the base, and that tiny tie point is the "knot." On dark hair, unbleached knots show up as small dots along your parting and hairline — especially visible once you go HD, since HD lace is more transparent by design. Bleaching lightens those knots so the hair looks like it's growing straight from the scalp, not sewn onto it. If your HD unit still isn't sitting naturally, bleached knots are usually the missing step, not the lace itself.

Store it like it's worth something

Between wears, keep your unit on a wig stand to hold its shape, or in a satin or silk bag if you're traveling — cotton and rough fabric will frizz it faster than daily wear will. Keep it out of direct sun and away from humid bathrooms. And as tempting as it is after a long night out, sleeping in it is the fastest way to turn a smooth install into a matted one by morning.

When to bring it in

Even with good home care, hair benefits from a proper wash and deep-condition it can't get in a sink — what we'd call a hair laundry. If your unit is starting to feel dry or tangle more than usual, that's the signal, not a reason to reach for a new bundle.

Done right, a well-maintained Peruvian unit can carry you 9–12 months of daily wear, sometimes longer with occasional use. That's the whole point of investing in real hair in the first place.
